The first assignment given to us in class was to reflect upon ourselves as writers. Specifically, we were to outline something of a style whilst also listing out attributes and weaknesses. I stated at the time that my style was more or less all over the map. I also recall mentioning that this was a consequence of what is both my greatest strength and most important weakness \u2013 producing content \u201cunder pressure\u201d and off the tip of my tongue rather than following the more proper route of planning, drafts, reviews and so on. I\u2019d like to say that has changed, but in truth I\u2019ve relied more on my old habits than ever as family issues and several short notice, high demand, and time sensitive work projects have left me with almost time. This of course is no excuse for missing projects and assignments \u2013 but when a more expedient technique is available to ensure said assignments were completed, I simply couldn\u2019t resist the temptation to use it.<\/p>\n
All that said, there was still plenty to be learned. The class has left me with a far more refined ability to delegate tasks and work within groups. It certainly is not the first time I have been called upon perform group work in class, but usually my method was to more or less take over, shunt fellow members aside and perform the task on my own. The other group members got a \u201cfree\u201d grade from quality work they didn\u2019t need bother with, and I got to dictate the project without concerning myself with anyone else’s input or schedule. Everybody wins yes? Perhaps, but that’s not exactly the pinnacle of teamwork. As it happens the caveats of the final project for this class made it impossible to for any one person go it alone. I won\u2019t say I enjoyed being forced to give up control, but I am glad to have had the experience.<\/p>\n
The concept of delegation could not have been better timed: Because of the aforementioned projects and even more coming very soon, my office has decided to hire some assistants for me. The idea is simple enough. Hand off the menial aspects of my job so that I may concentrate on the complex development aspects. That is all well and good, but it won\u2019t benefit the office, myself, or even the new hires if I am unable to manage effectively, and that means the sharing of things that I have worked alone on for my entire career. After years of sneering at and dodging the concept of group work in school or on the job I finally relented and found myself picking up a new life skill just in time to apply it. Who says nothing in school applies to the real word?<\/p>\n
Beyond that I found the class as a whole to be an enjoyable and fun forum. If nothing else the various in class discussions were a treat. It is always stimulating to parse issue with others who like to think about the topics beyond knee jerk reactions \u2013 even and especially when their opinions differ from my own.<\/p>\n
